Our guest speaker was Frenchy’s Tommy Shook who will spoke about Stone Crab Harvesting. We are in the middle of Stone Crab Season, and Frenchy’s in Clearwater Beach is one of the largest processors of Stone Crab Claws in the country. Tommy Shook runs that part of Frenchy’s the business. He talked about the habits of Stone Crabs, trapping and processing them, and the details of supplying claws to cities as far away is New York, Boston, and Chicago.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard stationed at Sand Key will be our guest speakers. They will discuss boating safety, tell some stories and more including what they look for if they board your boat. They will also review some of their recent rescues off the Pinellas Coast which you may have heard about. They were our guest speakers about four years ago and it was a great meeting.

Our guest speaker for April’s Boat Club meeting will be a representative from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Turtle Protection Team. She will discuss the nature of sea turtle nesting and the effects of man-made lighting on their nesting habits.
Loggerhead Turtle nesting season begins May 1st. Turtles start laying their eggs on our beaches as early as mid-May. Last year over 175 nests were reported on Pinellas Beaches; 16 were in Indian Rocks Beach.

There will be two great speakers from Marine Max. Collin Heimensen, Sales Manager will take us through the history of one of the largest marine dealerships, that happens to be based here in Pinellas County.
Then Capt. Keith will talk about some of the Marine Max classes he teaches involving boat uses and navigation with Marine Max…most are free.

This meeting is for the birds–or rather about the birds.
As boaters, we all see and interact with water birds, but few of us know much about them. We all live in and around the water—together.
Our guest speaker is Lynn Sumerson from the Audubon Society. He will discuss the large water birds we see in Florida with a focus on our Ospreys who in a few months will be building nests and having babies.
